QUEEN CITY VS LITTLETON MATCH REPORT - 10/1/16

D4 Recap (by Coach Pete):

D4 match against the Littleton Eagles was the first to kick-off at 3:00 pm. The D4 squad kitted out in the white jumpers received the opening kick-off. The men in White started off well putting several phases of play together; but, it was the number of penalties Queen City committed that became their worst enemies. The Littleton backs seized their opportunities and came out strong right off the bat. Ten minutes into the match; Littleton took full advantage of a QC penalty and scored first with a 3-pointer through the sticks. Eleven minutes later, Littleton was on the board again with an unconverted try to make the score 0 - 8 to the men in Blue.

Captain and Prop Ryan Orlowski through quick thinking and reading a gap in the Littleton defense; executing a lovely pick-n-go to crash over the line for the men in White first try of the match. The conversion sailed wide to bring the contest to 5 – 8 at the 24th minute mark.

The Eagles scored three more converted tries to close out the first half at 5 – 29.

The spark for the men in White in the second half was led by a couple of Old Boys; showing their skill, knowledge, and treachery. At the 58th minute mark of the match, Center Matt Berry after receiving a pass from Scrumhalf Eric Mayer, hoisted a long cut-out pass to a streaking Winger Eric Baliruno who took the pill on a 60-meter jaunt for a try in the corner. The conversion once again sailed wide. This play alone was well worth the admission ticket to watch such a play. But wait, there’s more. At the 71st minute, Berry was not done yet. He had to prove that tackling is not about the player; but, about the ball. He came up hard on defense and hit the Littleton #13 chest to chest. While on his feet, he singly handed ripped the ball from Eagle Outside Center and easily jogged-in to dot down the third and final try of the game for the men in White. Berry failed the conversion to keep himself humble.

Littleton went on to win the game 15 – 72. Queen City D4 showed their intent; but, Littleton was able to shut them down.

Although City played well in spurts, the Eagle backline was a bit too strong. City’s scrums were much better than their previous contest and dominated the Littleton’s forward pack. Overall, the men in White struggled to find continuity, had costly penalties, and lacked quick decision making which allowed Littleton to run away with this match.
