QUEEN CITY VS BOULDER B - 3/13/16

The day was cloudy and cool. The temperature had dropped by a few degrees upon leaving Denver. The field was a grass field in reasonable shape; but, it was extremely narrow. There was a slight breeze blowing from south to north. The club showed up with nearly two full sides with the hope of playing extra time to get everyone a good run. The decision was to play two (2) 40-minute halves; so, the time had to be split among the two squads.

City kicked off going south to north; therefore, had the wind to their backs which proved not to be a factor. Flyhalf Scott Trench kicked off very deep putting immediate pressure on the men in White. Referee Chris Hansen whistled the Boulder squad for hands into the ruck. Flyhalf Trench split the uprights at 1:40 to give the men in Orange and Black a 3 - 0 lead. The ensuing kick-off saw City take good control of the ball. A good recycle ball saw Scrumhalf Charlie Keener hoist a box kick down field. Good pressure from City saw the ball go into touch. City controlled the lineout with a driving maul. The maul was stopped and City went into their power game. Recycling the ball from the base of the ruck saw newcomer Prop Matt Boyer power his way over the line to dot down for the 5-pointer and his first. Flyhalf Trench added the extras to extend the City lead to 10 - 0 at the 3:36 mark of the half. After a deep probing kick from Flyhalf Trench; once again saw the City forwards make sorties at the Boulder line. A good line break by 2nd Rower Bryan Gustafson added another try to the men in Orange and Black scoring line. Once again Flyhalf Trench added the extras to make the score 17 - 0 after 16 minutes. It was now time for the backs to get into the action. Inside Center Scott Dishner sprang free to power his way over the line to dot down for the try. Scrumhalf Charlie Keener split the uprights for the 2-points to make the City lead 24 - 0 at the 23rd minute mark of the first half. City kept up the relentless pressure on the men in White holding them deep inside their own territory. A deep probing kick by Flyhalf Trench saw a lineout awarded to City deep in the Boulder's territory. A driving maul was once again stopped by Boulder. No. 8 and Captain Dan Herr made a break for the line. Three phases later Lock Forward George Jacobs picked up a ball at the base of the ruck to score the 5-pointer. The conversion kick sailed wide; but, City extended their lead to 29 - 0 at the 30:40 minute mark. At the ensuing kick-off, Captain Dan Herr probed at the Boulder line. After three (3) more phases, Scrumhalf Keener hit Prop Boyer and Matt went on a gallop down the center of the field. However, Mr. Boyer was penalized for holding on. Boulder was able to clear; but, at the ensuing lineout City was able to assert good defensive pressure giving Boulder bad ball to handle. A good jackal ensued to put City back on the front foot. Four (4) phases later, Flyhalf Trench sold a dummy runner and dove over the line for the try. The conversion was missed to make at the scoring line 34 - 0 at 34:24 minute of the first half. City was not done for the half. Too much defense pressure saw Referee Hansen ding the men in Orange and Black for a ruck infringement. Boulder took the quick tap; however, the pass went awry into touch. A good lineout ball was won and spun out to an awaiting pod of forwards. Boulder was whistled for hands in the ruck. Flyhalf Trench made them pay and added the 3-points to close out the first half scoring giving the men in Orange and Black the 37 - 0 lead at halftime.

A wholesale personnel change was made at the halftime break. However, there was not a let down in the play of the men in Orange and Black. Pressure continued to be put onto Boulder, keeping them pinned inside their own half. City continued to pound at the men in White; but, to no avail. A scrum was order with City put-in. The ball came shooting out the back of the scrum giving bad ball to the backs. A poorly placed kick led to a penalty kick against City. Boulder took the quick tap and was off to the races in one of their rare ventures into City territory. The try was scored and converted to make the score 37 - 7 at the 60:27 mark of the match. Boulder was on the front foot; however, stout defense by City kept the men in White at bay. A lineout awarded to City. A poor toss from the lineout put City on the back foot; however, some aggressive running by the forwards got the men in Orange and Black back to the attack. After an attack of five (5) phases, saw Flyhalf Dorian Bunn put a kick over the top that rolled into the in-goal area. The ensuing 22-m drop-out went into touch. The men in White were signaled for offside at the lineout. The pill was placed into touch for another lineout. A broken play from the lineout saw the Boulder defense go to sleep and Inside Center Scott Trench speed his way to the line for his second 5-pointer. The conversion once again sailed wide; but, City extended its lead to 42 - 7 at the 73:12 minute mark of the match. After another huge clearing kick down field by Center Trench, saw a lineout award to Boulder. A bad throw by the men in White gave possession back to City. A kick over once again found its way into the in-goal. The ensuing 22-m drop-out saw newcomer Hunt Applegate field the kick and make a good return. Boulder was whistled for a ruck infringement. A quick tap was taken and Boulder was deemed not to be the required 10-meters. A penalty play was called upon. After a good recycle ball, Prop Matty Williams powered his way over the chalk after previously being denied earlier to get on the scoreboard. Inside Center Trench closed out the scoring with the conversion kick and the game as Referee Hansen blew the final whistle. City had the convincing victory at 49 - 7.
