Super Summer 7's First Match of the Summer Season

Last night QCRFC kicked off the local summer 7's league with 3 matches, going 1 and 2. We had a decent turn out of guys with 5 Queen City players (Hayden, Charlie, Ryan, Juan, Alex) and 6 Red Rocks players (Frosty, James, Alex, Kyle, Redd, Francisoc) as well as support from Cody Melphy and his brother Zach.

The boys did well for the first hit out after 3 training sessions and new players being introduced.

1st Match QC-25 vs. SBWF-5
QC started the season off with a victory of Soft Ball Was Full (East old boys/Barbos) 25-5. The boys played well working the ball and game plan. However, SBWF struck first with a scrumhalf pick from a scrum. At the 4 min mark the match was turned on its head though as a SBWF player was shown a red card for a penalty and back chat. QC scored immediately off the penalty and would go on to win easily. The boys worked the ball well and were able to take over with the man advantage.

2nd Match QC-10 vs. Glendale-20
The second match saw QC take on local rivals Glendale. This was arguably the best match of the evening in all games played. The boys started strong and were rewarded with the first points of the match at the 1:30 mark when we swung the ball wide off a scrum. Glendale scored to even the match after great back and forth play by both squads. A couple of mistakes late in the half saw the boys down 15-5 at half time. The boys would continue to play good defense and work the game plan. However the match went to Glendale 20-10. Overall good play from the entire squad. Cut out a couple of mistakes and the match easily could have gone the Orange and Blacks way.

3rd Match QC-0 vs. Quins-20
The third match saw the boys take on another local rival in the Quins. The rain had stayed away until this match kicked off. Unfortunately the rain compounded many mistakes from QC. The boys looked to run out of energy during this match and unforced errors were the teams undoing. Credit to the Quins for making the most of our handling woes and miscues.

Overall it was a good evening of 7's. Lots of positives to start the summer with, great support from the Red Rocks boys who are definitely learning on the fly and holding their own. The entire team showed a lot of heart and composure.

TRAINING RESUMES TONIGHT @ BIBLE PARK 6:30pm

Everyone come out and get a run. DENVER 7's is on JUNE 27th. I have heard talk about entering 2 sides which could definitely be possible if numbers improve. Try and make at least one training a week. See your mates and get some rugby time in.

Cheers,
Mathew Berry
